Artist Statement
“My work is an expression of both the external and the internal. It is the result of an ongoing interaction between what I view externally and what is awakened within me. I often paint a series or collection of paintings in connection to an affirmation, a meditation, or a spiritual precept. I place the intention into my work for healing.”
How I Paint
I work primarily by staining paper, and other surfaces, with permanent inks and then painting on top of the ink with oil or a combination of oil and oil pastel. I use my hands as my primary painting tools, although I will also use a brush, rags, and pallet knives. The interaction between the stained surface, the oil and the movement of my fingers creates both the color and texture I am pursuing in each painting. When I begin a painting I choose a stained surface, often already prepared, that meets my need in the moment.
I prefer to work on textured surfaces, such as cold press very heavy weight handmade papers. Recently I have been applying mud mixed with varnish to my stained canvases and then working the oil on top of these more heavily textured surfaces reinforcing an experience of intimacy for both the viewer and myself. My paintings vary in size and I currently work very small, reinforcing an experience of intimacy. I regard my style as both abstract and as painting in the intimate.
