Counting the Omer for 2013

Explanation of the Omer Series Paintings
For centuries a practice of ritual counting, known as Counting the Omer has been used as a time for intense introspection and spiritual growth. The ritual counting spans 49 days, a time equal to the seven biblical weeks of wandering in the desert before receiving the revelations at Mt. Sinai.
My Omer Series Paintings follow the practice of linking each week of the Omer and each day of each week with the attributes of seven of the Sefirot (principles of the Devine in Creation). In this way, for example, the first day of counting is referred to as Hesed Sh’B’ Hesed: compassionate love in compassionate love. Focusing on the attributes of these Sefirot becomes a daily meditation and intention for each day of my “journey”, resulting in one panel created for each day.
Each individual panel and the writings that come from each day, are meant to inspire a deeper reflection in the viewer as she or he responds to them on each day of the Omer. Every year’s painting has resulted in different writing as well as different visual images.
2013 marks the fifth year for me of painting on the Omer.
